Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Certification Practice Test

The test is about verifying that a prevacuum (dynamic-air-removal) steam sterilizer can effectively remove air and allow steam to reach all parts of a test load. It uses a test pack with a chemical indicator that shows whether steam has penetrated and whether air has been evacuated during the cycle. A passing result means the vacuum phase and steam distribution worked properly, which is essential for proper sterilization of porous or wrapped loads.

This isn’t about measuring how long the cycle runs or about killing microorganisms. Biological lethality is assessed with biological indicators, not this test. While chemical indicators are involved in the readout, the essential point is confirming air removal and steam penetration, not merely the indicator changing.
