Reprocessing energy-powered surgical devices must follow the manufacturer’s instructions because these devices have specific design features, power sources, and often sensitive components that standard cleaning methods can’t safely address. Adhering to those instructions ensures the correct sequence and methods are used for cleaning, disinfection or sterilization, and reassembly, protecting both the device’s function and patient safety.

Start with thorough pre-cleaning to remove organicsoiling, which makes subsequent cleaning achievable; then perform manual cleaning to physically remove debris, especially from small channels, hinges, and connectors where soil can hide. After cleaning, apply the disinfection or sterilization process that the manufacturer approves for that device, recognizing that energy-powered items may be sensitive to heat, moisture, or certain chemicals, and may require specific sterilants or cycles. Once the device is sterilized or disinfected, conduct functional testing to verify power, controls, and safety features are working properly, and to confirm there are no new issues from the cleaning or sterilization process. Finally, store the device as directed to preserve sterility and protect it from damage or recontamination during storage.

This approach is essential because skipping cleaning steps, using household cleaners, or discarding the device after a single use would not reliably remove bioburden, could damage delicate electronics, and would not ensure ongoing safety and effectiveness for future procedures.
